Darbepoetin alfa is a powerful stimulant of erythropoiesis, mimicking the action of natural erythropoietin. Unlike the body's own hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), which have three N-linked carbohydrate chains, darbepoetin alfa boasts five. These extra sugar molecules do not alter the molecular structure but significantly extend the half-life of the drug in the body, providing enhanced therapeutic effects.
