Darbepoetin alfa enhances erythropoiesis, mirroring the natural action of erythropoietin. This innovative formulation features five N-linked carbohydrate chains, compared to the three present in both the natural hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). These additional sugar chains are structurally identical to those found in the natural hormone, granting darbepoetin alfa an extended half-life and superior in vivo activity. Remarkably, despite these enhancements, darbepoetin alfa retains a precise and effective interaction with the erythropoietin receptor.
