What is ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic that falls under the fluoroquinolone category. It is designed to effectively tackle a wide range of bacterial infections that can impact various parts of the body, including the skin, bones, joints, respiratory system, sinuses, urinary tract, and even certain types of diarrhea. Moreover, it is a viable treatment option for gonorrhea.

This antibiotic is also recommended for individuals who may have been exposed to anthrax or specific forms of the plague, making it a crucial tool in the fight against severe infections.

However, it's essential to note that ciprofloxacin should only be utilized when safer treatment alternatives are ineffective.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, can sometimes result in serious or disabling side effects that may not be reversible, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.

Important Information

Ciprofloxacin may lead to significant side effects, including tendon problems, nerve damage, notable mood changes, or low blood sugar levels. If you notice symptoms like headache, increased hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning pain, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory issues, suicidal thoughts, or unexpected joint pain, stop taking this medication immediately and consult your healthcare provider.

In rare cases, ciprofloxacin could potentially harm your aorta, leading to severe bleeding or even death. Seek emergency medical help right away if you experience severe, persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.

Individuals with muscle disorders should avoid ciprofloxacin. Be sure to inform your physician if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

Before taking this medication

Ciprofloxacin should not be used if you are allergic to it or if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • Currently taking tizanidine.
  • Allergic to other fluoroquinolones (including gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, etc.).
  • Currently taking theophylline.

This medication may cause tendon swelling or tears, especially in the Achilles tendon, which can occur during treatment or even months after stopping it. Those most at risk include children, older adults, organ transplant recipients, and anyone taking steroids.

To ensure ciprofloxacin is appropriate for you, discuss any of the following conditions with your doctor:

  • History of tendon issues, bone problems, arthritis, or joint conditions (especially in children).
  • Circulation issues, aneurysms, or artery problems.
  • Heart conditions or high blood pressure.
  • Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
  • Diabetes.
  • Muscle or nerve disorders, including myasthenia gravis.
  • Kidney disease.
  • Seizures or epilepsy.
  • Head injuries or brain tumors.
  • Long QT syndrome (in yourself or a family member).
  • Low potassium levels (hypokalemia).

Do not administer this medication to a child without consulting a doctor. The effects of ciprofloxacin on unborn babies are unknown; therefore, inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Additionally, avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.

How should I take ciprofloxacin?

Take ciprofloxacin precisely as directed by your healthcare provider. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any accompanying medication guides thoroughly.

This antibiotic can be taken with or without food but should be taken at the same time daily. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole?do not crush, chew, or break it.

Make sure to complete the entire prescribed course of ciprofloxacin, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication. Missing doses can increase the risk of developing a medication-resistant infection. Remember, this antibiotic is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.

Do not share ciprofloxacin with anyone else.

Store it at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
