What is Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic that falls under the fluoroquinolone class (pronounced flor-o-KWIN-o-lone), specifically designed to combat various bacterial infections in the body. It's commonly prescribed for skin infections, bone and joint infections, respiratory and sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and certain types of diarrhea. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in treating gonorrhea and is utilized for individuals exposed to anthrax or specific forms of plague.

This medication is intended for use in cases where other safer antibiotics are ineffective.

However, it's important to note that fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, may carry risks of serious or potentially irreversible side effects, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.

Important Information

Ciprofloxacin can lead to severe side effects, including tendon complications, nerve injuries, significant mood or behavior changes, and low blood sugar levels.

If you experience symptoms like headaches, increased hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration issues, suicidal thoughts, or sudden joint pain or movement difficulties, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.

In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may cause aortic damage, leading to severe bleeding or even death. Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience severe and persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.

Individuals with muscle disorders, particularly those with a history of myasthenia gravis, should inform their doctor before taking this medication.

Before Taking This Medication

Do not use ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if you:

  • Are taking tizanidine
  • Are allergic to other fluoroquinolones (like gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, etc.)
  • Are currently using theophylline

Ciprofloxacin may cause tendon swelling or tearing, especially in the Achilles tendon, either during treatment or months after stopping. Those at higher risk include children, older adults, individuals on steroids, or those who have received an organ transplant.

To ensure your safety, inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Tendon or bone problems, arthritis, or other joint conditions (especially in children)
  • Blood circulation disorders, aneurysms, or narrowing/hardening of arteries
  • Heart issues or high blood pressure
  • Genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Diabetes

  • Kidney issues
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Head injuries or brain tumors
  • Long QT syndrome (in you or a family member)
