SUBSTANCE
Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic that falls under the fluoroquinolone category. It effectively fights off bacterial infections throughout the body, making it a go-to solution for treating a wide range of ailments, including skin, bone, and joint infections, as well as respiratory, sinus, and urinary tract infections. It?s also used for specific types of diarrhea and is prescribed for treating gonorrhea.
Additionally, ciprofloxacin is an essential treatment for those exposed to anthrax or certain types of plague. This medication is recommended only for infections that cannot be treated effectively with safer alternatives.
However, fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin may carry the risk of severe or potentially irreversible side effects, such as tendon ruptures or nerve issues.
Important InformationBe aware that ciprofloxacin can lead to serious side effects, including tendon problems, nerve damage, significant mood changes, and low blood sugar levels. If you experience symptoms such as severe headaches, increased hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, or sudden joint pain, stop taking the medication immediately and consult your healthcare provider.
In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may affect your aorta, leading to severe bleeding or even death. Seek emergency medical help if you experience intense, persistent pain in your chest, stomach, or back.
If you have a muscle disorder, inform your doctor, as you may not be a suitable candidate for ciprofloxacin, especially if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.
Before Taking This MedicationDo not take ciprofloxacin if you have an allergy to it or if you are using:
- Tizanidine
- Other fluoroquinolones (such as gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin)
- Theophylline
Ciprofloxacin may cause swelling or tearing of tendons, particularly the Achilles tendon, which can occur during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. The risk is heightened for certain groups, including children, older adults, steroid users, or organ transplant recipients.
To ensure this medication is right for you, disclose your medical history to your doctor, especially if you have:

How to Take CiprofloxacinTake ciprofloxacin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides provided.
You can take ciprofloxacin with or without food, but be consistent in timing your doses each day. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
Complete the entire course of ciprofloxacin, even if you start feeling better quickly. Missing doses can increase the risk of developing medication-resistant infections. Note that ciprofloxacin is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or common cold.
Never share ciprofloxacin with others. Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
