What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is a powerful antibiotic from the penicillin family, expertly designed to combat various bacterial infections. This medication is frequently prescribed for a range of conditions, including tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections affecting the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.

In certain cases, Amoxicillin is used in conjunction with another antibiotic, clarithromycin (known as Biaxin), to effectively treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infections. This powerful duo may also include a medication aimed at reducing stomach acid.

Important Considerations

Be aware that Amoxicillin can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. It?s important to consult your healthcare provider about using alternative non-hormonal contraceptive methods (like condoms, diaphragms, or spermicides) to prevent pregnancy while on this medication. Always complete the full course as prescribed, even if you start to feel better before the infection is fully resolved. Remember, Amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Never share this medication with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.

Taking antibiotics may lead to diarrhea, which can occur during treatment or up to a few months afterward. If you experience watery or bloody diarrhea, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately. Avoid anti-diarrheal medications unless advised by your healthcare provider.

Before You Begin Treatment

Do not take Amoxicillin if you have an allergy to any penicillin antibiotics, including ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.

To ensure Amoxicillin is safe for you, please inform your doctor if you have:

  • asthma
  • liver or kidney disease
  • mononucleosis (mono)
  • a history of antibiotic-related diarrhea
  • allergies to food or medications

Amoxicillin is generally regarded as safe for pregnant women. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, notify your doctor while using this medication.

How to Take Amoxicillin

Follow your doctor?s instructions carefully while taking Amoxicillin, adhering to the directions on your prescription label. Do not alter the recommended dosage or duration of treatment.

Take the medication consistently at the same time each day.

The Moxatag version of Amoxicillin should be taken with food or within one hour after a meal.

Certain forms of Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food; always check your medication label for specific instructions.

For liquid forms, shake well before measuring a dose. Utilize the provided dosage syringe, measuring spoon, or medicine cup for accuracy. If you don?t have a measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. You may take the liquid directly or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale, ensuring to consume it all immediately. Do not save any mixture for later use.

Chew the chewable tablet fully before swallowing.

Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.

If you?re on Amoxicillin for an extended period, you may need regular blood tests to monitor kidney and liver functions.

If you?re combining Amoxicillin with clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for ulcer treatment, adhere to all medication directions. Review the medication guide provided with each prescription, and consult your doctor before making any changes to your doses or schedules.

Use this medication for the entire prescribed duration. Symptoms may improve before the infection is fully eliminated, and missed doses could increase the risk of antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember, Amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or common cold.

Never share this medication with anyone, even if they have similar symptoms.

This medication may interfere with certain medical tests, so inform any healthcare provider treating you that you are currently using Amoxicillin.

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
