What is Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is a powerful antibiotic from the macrolide class, designed to combat various bacterial infections throughout the body. This medication is frequently prescribed for treating infections affecting the skin and respiratory system. Moreover, it is often utilized in combination with other treatments to address stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria.

Key Information to Know

It?s imperative to complete the full course of clarithromycin as directed, even if you start feeling better before the infection fully resolves. Skipping doses can increase the likelihood of developing antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember, clarithromycin is ineffective against viral infections such as colds and the flu.

This medication should not be taken if you have a known allergy to clarithromycin or similar antibiotics. It is also contraindicated for individuals with a history of jaundice or liver complications due to this medication, as well as those with liver or kidney disease while on colchicine. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking or planning to take, as many drugs can interact with clarithromycin, and some combinations should be avoided.

Precautions Before Use

Avoid using clarithromycin if you have experienced allergies to it or related medications such as azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak, Zmax), erythromycin, or telithromycin, or if you have:

  • Jaundice or liver problems stemming from clarithromycin;
  • Liver or kidney disease while using colchicine.

Some medications may cause serious side effects when combined with clarithromycin. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment if you are taking:

  • Cisapride;
  • Pimozide;
  • Lovastatin or simvastatin;
  • Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine.

To ensure clarithromycin is appropriate for you, disclose any history of:

  • Heart issues;
  • Long QT syndrome (in yourself or family members);
  • Coronary artery disease;
  • Myasthenia gravis;
  • Liver disease;
  • Kidney disease;
  • Diabetes;
  • Electrolyte imbalances (such as low potassium or magnesium levels).

Clarithromycin may pose risks to an unborn baby. Effective birth control is essential to avoid pregnancy while on this medication. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.

How to Take Clarithromycin

Follow your physician's instructions for taking clarithromycin precisely as prescribed. Adhere to all directions on your prescription label, and consult your doctor before adjusting the dosage or duration of treatment.

Do not use this medication for any condition that hasn?t been evaluated by your doctor and avoid sharing it with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.

You can take both regular tablets and the oral suspension (liquid) with or without food. However, extended-release tablets must be taken with food. Do not crush, chew, or break these tablets; swallow them whole.

Clarithromycin is typically prescribed for a duration of 7 to 14 days. Ensure you complete the entire course, even if you start to feel better quickly. Skipping doses can increase the risk of resistant infections. Note that clarithromycin does not work against viral infections, such as the flu or common cold.

Store this medication in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.

If your treatment involves multiple medications, follow all instructions provided by your doctor, and never adjust your regimen without their approval.
