What is Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is a potent antibiotic from the macrolide family, specifically designed to tackle bacterial infections within the body. This medication is commonly prescribed for various bacterial infections impacting the skin and respiratory system. Additionally, clarithromycin plays a crucial role in treatment regimens for stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.

Important Information

To ensure the effectiveness of clarithromycin, it?s essential to complete the entire prescribed course, even if you start feeling better before the infection is fully cleared. Skipping doses increases the risk of antibiotic-resistant infections. Please note that this medication is ineffective against viral illnesses, including the common cold and influenza.

Do not use clarithromycin if you are allergic to it or similar antibiotics, have a history of jaundice or liver issues due to this medication, or are dealing with liver or kidney disease while taking colchicine.

Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're currently taking or any new ones you may begin or stop. Many drugs can interact with clarithromycin, and some combinations should be avoided.

Before Taking this Medication

Avoid clarithromycin if you have a known allergy to it or related medications, such as azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak, Zmax), erythromycin, or telithromycin, or if you have:

  • Had jaundice or liver issues due to clarithromycin
  • Liver or kidney disease while taking colchicine

Some medications can produce adverse reactions when taken with clarithromycin. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment plan if you are using any of the following drugs:

  • Cisapride
  • Pimozide
  • Lovastatin or simvastatin
  • Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine

To ensure your safety, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of:

  • Heart problems
  • Long QT syndrome (personal or family history)
  • Coronary artery disease (blocked arteries)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Electrolyte imbalances (low potassium or magnesium levels)

Clarithromycin may pose risks during pregnancy. Consider effective contraceptive methods while taking this medication and notify your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.

How Should I Take Clarithromycin?

Administer clarithromycin exactly as directed by your physician, adhering closely to the instructions on your prescription label. Avoid exceeding or reducing the prescribed dosage or duration of treatment.

Do not use this medication for any unverified condition. Sharing medication, even with those exhibiting similar symptoms, is not advised.

Regular tablets and oral suspensions (liquid) can be taken with or without food; however, extended-release tablets should always be taken with food. Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole for optimal effectiveness.

Clarithromycin is typically prescribed for a duration of 7 to 14 days. Ensure you complete the entire treatment course, even if your symptoms improve quickly, as this prevents the development of antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember, clarithromycin is not effective against viral infections such as the flu or common cold.

Store your medication in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.

If your treatment plan requires multiple medications, follow your doctor's instructions for each. Review all provided instructions and do not adjust your dosage or schedule without consulting your healthcare provider.
