What is Singulair?

Singulair (montelukast) is a powerful leukotriene inhibitor that effectively blocks the action of leukotrienes?substances released during allergic reactions that can cause airway inflammation and asthma symptoms. This medication is designed to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months, and it is also effective for those over 6 years old who experience exercise-induced bronchospasm.

Additionally, Singulair helps relieve perennial allergy symptoms in both adults and children starting from 6 months of age, as well as seasonal allergies in individuals aged 2 years and older.

Note: Always consult with a healthcare professional before administering this medication to children.

For adults and teenagers aged 15 and older, Singulair can prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, but it should not be used as a substitute for other asthma treatments.

Important Information

It?s crucial to understand that Singulair is not intended for the immediate relief of an asthma attack; for that purpose, a fast-acting inhaler is necessary. If you notice a decline in the effectiveness of your asthma treatments or experience worsening symptoms, consult your doctor without delay.

Be vigilant for any mood or behavioral changes, including feelings of anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts, and seek immediate medical help if these occur. Always follow the directions on your medication label and ensure your healthcare team is fully informed about your medical history and current medications.

While improvements in symptoms may take several weeks, continue taking Singulair as prescribed and inform your doctor if you see no progress after this period.

How Should I Take Singulair?

Take Singulair precisely as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Typically, it is taken once daily in the evening for asthma or allergy prevention. For exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, take a dose at least 2 hours prior to exercising, and do not take another dose for at least 24 hours. Always adhere to your doctor's specific instructions.

Remember, Singulair is not a rescue medication for asthma attacks; only use a fast-acting inhaler in such situations. If you have concerns about your asthma medications, discuss them with your physician.

Swallow the regular tablet whole with water, and ensure the chewable tablet is fully chewed before swallowing. As improvements may take weeks, continue taking Singulair as directed, and consult your doctor if you see no improvement after several weeks.

If you are also taking steroid asthma medications, do not stop them abruptly without consulting your doctor, as a gradual reduction may be necessary.

Asthma management often requires a combination of medications; therefore, use all prescribed treatments as directed. Store Singulair at room temperature, away from moisture and heat, and do not open oral granule packets until you are ready to use them.
