Discover Spiriva: The Breath of Fresh Air
Spiriva (tiotropium) is a powerful bronchodilator engineered to relax airway muscles, enhancing airflow to your lungs. This effective medication is primarily utilized to prevent bronchospasm?characterized by the constriction of airways?in adults suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including bronchitis and emphysema.
Additionally, Spiriva Respimat is a go-to option for preventing asthma attacks in adults and children aged 6 and above, though it is not suitable for younger users.
Essential Information
For optimal results, Spiriva capsules must be used exclusively with the HandiHaler device and should never be swallowed whole. Only one capsule should be used at a time.
The Spiriva Respimat Inhalation Spray comes in a convenient carton featuring one aluminum cartridge and a Respimat inhaler. The cartridge is tailored for the Respimat device, making it essential to avoid substituting it with any other inhaler. The Respimat inhaler is designed with a sleek gray body and a see-through base that easily detaches for cartridge insertion, complete with a dose indicator for your convenience.
Prior to using Spiriva, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of narrow-angle glaucoma, bladder obstruction, or an enlarged prostate.
Remember, Spiriva is meant for the prevention of bronchospasm and is not intended for treating acute attacks. Instead, use a fast-acting inhaler for immediate relief.
Before You Start Spiriva
Do not use Spiriva if you are allergic to tiotropium or ipratropium (found in Atrovent, Combivent, DuoNeb). To ensure Spiriva is right for you, inform your doctor if you have:
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Kidney disease
- Allergies to milk
- Urination challenges due to an enlarged prostate
If you are pregnant, consult your doctor regarding potential risks, as poorly managed asthma can lead to complications like premature birth. Breastfeeding while using Spiriva is not recommended; discuss this with your healthcare provider. Note that Spiriva Respimat is not advised for children under 6 years old.
How to Use Spiriva Effectively
Use Spiriva exactly as your physician prescribes. The typical dosage is 2 inhalations via the mouth once daily. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label, and do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of use.
Spiriva is not a rescue inhaler and won?t provide quick relief during a COPD flare-up. Consult your doctor if your medications seem less effective over time.
Carefully read all provided patient information, including medication guides and instructions. If you have any questions, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.
Children should be supervised by an adult when using Spiriva Respimat.
Spiriva HandiHaler is packaged with capsules and a specialized inhaler. To use, load one capsule into the device, close the mouthpiece, and press the side button to pierce the capsule, allowing medication to enter the inhalation chamber. Two inhalations are required to complete the dosage for one capsule.
Never swallow Spiriva capsules; they are strictly for use with the HandiHaler device. Always dispose of any unused capsules immediately after removing them from the blister pack to prevent exposure to air, which can diminish their effectiveness.
The Spiriva Respimat inhaler comes with a cartridge designed for the device. To release medication, turn the base of the Respimat until it clicks, requiring two puffs for a full dose.
Note that the Respimat inhaler will lock after 30 doses (or 60 puffs), and an indicator will alert you when only 14 puffs remain (approximately 7 days' supply).
Regular lung function tests are essential to ensure Spiriva is effectively managing your condition. To reap the full benefits of this medication, use it consistently and refill your prescription before running low.
Store both the capsules and the Respimat inhaler at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Avoid freezing them, and do not keep capsules inside the HandiHaler device.
