Introducing Tesamorelin, a specialized formulation featuring a growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF). This innovative medication is designed to assist in reducing excess abdominal fat associated with specific HIV treatments, a condition commonly known as lipodystrophy.

It's important to clarify that Tesamorelin is not a weight-loss solution and should not be used for managing obesity. Instead, it is specifically prescribed for the reduction of excess abdominal fat in individuals with HIV who are experiencing lipodystrophy.

Usage Restrictions:

  • The long-term cardiovascular safety and benefits of Tesamorelin have not been thoroughly studied. It's essential to assess the continuation of treatment for patients who do not show significant improvement, as measured by a reduction in visceral fat through waist circumference or CT imaging.
  • Tesamorelin is not intended for weight loss and has a weight-neutral effect.
  • Current evidence does not support the idea that Tesamorelin enhances adherence to antiretroviral therapies in HIV-positive patients.

Dosage Guidelines:

The recommended dosage for Tesamorelin is 2 mg, administered via subcutaneous injection once daily. The preferred injection site is the abdomen; be sure to rotate between different areas to avoid injecting into scar tissue, bruises, or near the navel.

Reconstitution Instructions:

To reconstitute Tesamorelin, use the diluent provided with the medication. Combine the 2 mg vial of Tesamorelin with 2.1 mL of the diluent. Gently roll the vial in your hands for 30 seconds to mix; do not shake. Comprehensive reconstitution instructions are included in the INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE leaflet that accompanies the packaging.

Administer Tesamorelin immediately after reconstitution, discarding any unused solution. Never freeze or refrigerate the reconstituted Tesamorelin.

Administration:

Before injecting, visually inspect the reconstituted Tesamorelin solution for any particles or discoloration. It should only be injected if it appears clear, colorless, and free from particulate matter. Administer Tesamorelin subcutaneously into the skin of the abdomen, ensuring you rotate injection sites and avoid areas with scar tissue, bruises, or proximity to the navel.
